I would like to warn other developers about shocking Apple practices of not allowing to update already published games. I have two published games on App Store and Apple does not allow me to update my games to fix simple bugs or just to replace the game icons. The updates are classified as SPAM despite the successful publication of the original games. I cannot comprehend what benefit would Apple have from dealing with upset users and developers who download suboptimal apps and who are not allowed to update already published apps to fix issues and improve users' experience. Do you think that such practices are fair? Your thoughts are welcome.
Apple Practices Concerning Published Apps and Their Updates
Welcome to the forum.
But the forum is not really intended for such "warnings". It is to help solve issues.
The fact is not that reviewer does not want you to update, it is that in the new review, he/she has evaluated your games as spam (for good reason or not, that's a question we cannot answer).
Have you answered to the review explaining why you consider your apps are not spam ?
You have certainly read the guidelines; it may help you understand the reason for rejection and better explain in your comments:
4.3 Spam
- (a) Don’t create multiple Bundle IDs of the same app. If your app has different versions for specific locations, sports teams, universities, etc., consider submitting a single app and provide the variations using in-app purchase.
- (b) Also avoid piling on to a category that is already saturated; the App Store has enough fart, burp, flashlight, fortune telling, dating, drinking games, and Kama Sutra apps, etc. already. We will reject these apps unless they provide a unique, high-quality experience. Spamming the store may lead to your removal from the Apple Developer Program.
You didn't provide any information that could help to help you, so a few questions:
- Are your 2 games similar ? that could fall in 4.3.a and cause rejection of both
- What type of game is it ? Is it in a very crowded game category ? that could fall in 4.3.b
- Have you identified games that are close to yours on the appstore ?
Finally, it is not because app was accepted in a previous review that it will be in a next one. It may just mean that issue was not detected before.
Good luck.
Hi, Thank you for your response. I understand that reviewers make their own judgment and decision and I accept that. I just think that it is not fair towards both developers and users not to allow the developers to update their apps (if it is a minor bug fix, for example), regardless of whether the app was approved by mistake or not. Is it better to make the suboptimal app available on App Store than to allow to fix issues? I should have read the guidelines before submitting the apps because the rejection of the minor updates was the last thing that I expected to happen. Would it be a good analogy to compare this to peer review process of scientific journals? Assume that the paper was accepted and then the researcher prepares the final version with minor errors corrected. Next, the reviewers reject the final version and say that the acceptance of the original was a mistake and the suboptimal original version with errors will be published. Where would be the logic in this?
Anyway, as the result of me criticising the process and trying to understand the reasons behind update rejections my account is set to be suspended.
