Xcode won't open

The welcome screen appears but the rotating indicators run apparently forever.

To open Xcode without launching any projects, select hold down on the option and shift keys while launching Xcode.

Than you, but this did not change the result. The loading indicators still continue indefinitely. Also, I have previously started Xcode by just clicking on the icon in the dock, which resulted in the screen offering me to select a project or create a new project at that time.
